California's MyFirstEV discount takes $3,500 off a new battery-electric vehicle at the point of sale. Because each automaker draws from its own capped allocation rather than a shared pool, the discount is arriving as a series of short, brand-specific demand surges. Tesla's allocation lasted five days. What happens to the transaction price inside those windows is the part nobody is pricing.

The BMW i4 has been quietly one of the better values in the lineup, and the reason has nothing to do with it being electric. It is a low-slung four-door coupe in a market that has decided it wants SUVs. Body style, not powertrain, is the constraint.
